Electronic medical record (EMR) for healthcare simulation – FOAMed interface for participants

Electronic medical records (EMR) – synonymous with electronic health records (EHR) – are used in healthcare simulation to support realistic narratives for the learners.

Typically “paper” or “laminated” notes outline the simulated patient’s key characteristics.

The patient notes used in simulation may be engaged with passively or actively and the participant interaction may range from a first experience for a novice learner in accessing basic clinical information in real time through to a senior provider interacting with a complex or deteriorating patient case.

Given that paper notes are rarely used in current healthcare settings (or at least used at an ever reducing rate) we recently co-created a Free Open Access Medical Education (FOAMed) resource that the reader should feel free to download and use in their simulation settings.

Thanks to my collegue Dr Tina Wu for leverging her highly developed IT skills for this work…

As the files are powerpoint (PPT) and hyperlinked they are fully modifiable to easy use in your setting. We plan to develop further files for Cerner and EPIC.
