Innovative Faculty Development in Healthcare Simulation

In 2018 we developed a “recent graduate” faculty development programme for healthcare simulation.

Rather than targeting senior staff, this new approach aimed to recruit PGY1-4 doctors (and other health professionals) for training in simulation.

Around this time we observed a rapid increase in demand for simulation without necessary a proliferation of human resources and skilled-staff to match the accelerating demand.

At the same time we observed how effective junior doctors were as operators in the simulation centre setting – especially when supported to teach and debrief their junior peers.

We noticed they were especially adept at looking after and teaching the medical students and that they closed many gaps that the senior simulation staff struggle to close in debriefings.

Likewise, we observed the close support and mentorship that near to peer nurses provided to each other in both the simulation centre and in the clinical setting.

As a result we developed the new Faculty Programme based on Adam Cheng’s work summarised by the infographic below and this blog post.

During our recent evaluation of the first 6 years of the program we were delighted to find 180 EOI sign-ups and over 60 staff completing the programme(s). If you are interested why not contact us or sign up:
